WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR
NW2C?
Eligibility for NW2C is determined by the student being the following:
-
an enrolled member of a Federal or State Recognized Tribe or
-
is a descendent of an enrolled member (Parent or Grand-Parent)

For the state of California, California tribal nations would be considered under State recognized. For a list of California nations, please visit https://nahc.ca.gov/cp/. (Please note that we recognize that this is not a complete list of all tribal nations that reside in California and highlights a need for a better and cohesive list and recognition of all CA tribal governments and tribes. Our eligibility guidelines are determined by the Office of Indian Education and the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1969 which follows below.

Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1969
Eligible Indian Student means an individual who meets the definition of “Indian” in section 6151 of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, as amended. (20 U.S.C. § 7491). Indian means any individual who is
(1) a member (as defined by the Indian tribe or band) of an Indian tribe or band, including those Indian tribe or bands terminated since 1940, and those recognized by the State in which the tribe or band reside; or
(2) a descendent in the first or second degree (parent or grandparent) as described in (1); or
(3) considered by the Secretary of the Interior to be an Indian for any purpose; or (4) an Eskimo or Aleut or other Alaska Native; or (5) a member of an organized Indian group that received a grant under the Indian Education Act of 1988 as it was in effect October 19, 1994.
